Networking, American style!

If you regularly listen to public speakers, you probably understand the power that a voice can hold. But today many of us are called on to use our own voices without any training or expertise in how to best use them to our advantage. Today, we need to be able to present to managers, clients and customers while sounding knowledgeable and assertive; to participate in meetings and make an impact with our contributions; to walk into a networking group sounding confident and at ease.

This half-day seminar will use basic vocal and singing techniques to help you be more at ease with your voice, and understand when and how to speak up. In a practical, workshop format, the seminar will use group singing as well as texts to help participants better control their voice and use it more effectively. Don’t worry if you can’t carry a tune – it’s not required for the seminar!

The seminar will be facilitated by Gildas de Saint Albin. Gildas has more than ten years experience as a senior manager, and also works as a pianist and choir master. He now consults with companies and artists helping teams and individuals better express themselves through the performing arts.

Place: Grenoble Ecole de Management, Room F104

The Cartoon Drawing for Trainers, Facilitators and Presenters Professional Development Seminar: charcoal, paper, and laughter combined to uncover some hidden talent.

We did a lot of drawing, but as not everyone also took notes we’ll share some of our take-aways from the day with Martin Shovel and Martha Leyton of CreativityWorks here.

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

Why develop the skill to draw cartoons to illustrate points during a presentation?

Martin shared SEVEN REASONS FOR CARTOONING:

1. accessible:  understood by everyone

2. compact:  can be small and simple

3. vivid:  appeals to the senses (visual language)

4. concrete:  right before your eyes!

5. memorable:  more than yet another PowerPoint image

6. spontaneous:  involves the audience as you draw

7. low tech:  all you need it something to draw on + something to draw with

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

Then, we had a chance to see – and try for ourselves – how simple (and effective) it is to actually draw even a rough sketch.  That does wonders for the confidence – it’s true, anyone can do it!

And we did a lot of it.

Take-away lesson:  Don’t be afraid to play with drawing.

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

With a cartoon or even a rough sketch to help illustrate an idea, the process of coming up with the image helps focus the abstract idea into something concrete.  You can’t draw an emotion, but you can draw a circle and some lines.

Take-away lesson:  Make the abstract concrete.

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

And we learned that it’s not just about drawing.  Words and images are inextricably linked through metaphor, so the process of sketching while you work out a verbal message can also help produce better words.  Got something to communicate? Frame it. Ask the right questions.

Take-away lesson:  Think metaphorically.  What’s it like?

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

How much is necessary to communicate a familiar idea, place, concept?  Not much!  Use metonyms. Sometimes all you need is the “essence” of an image that iconically represents the idea.  Or take a feature and use it to represent the whole thing.

(disclaimer – NOT DRAWN BY ME!  Here’s mine. Still workin’ on it…)

Take-away lesson:  Draw metonymically.  Also – less is more.

◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊  ◊

Though it’s not possible to summarize all the aha! moments that we all experienced throughout the day, I’ll share my own favorite takeaway:

Take-away lessonsThink visuallyHow do cartoons and drawing represent ideas such as motion, emotion, familiar objects? Observe & practice!  Build your own image “vocabulary” as you doodle.  Doodle! Draw fearlessly!

If you took this workshop, what were your own takeaways?

Additional note:  During our Seminar together, Martin and Martha mentioned their speechwriting consulting and their workshop, Words that Move Mountains.  One of their individual clients, Clare Gerada, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK, recently gave a speech at the annual primary care conference in Liverpool, England.  Check it out here.

Break out in a sweat at the thought of picking up the phone to make a “cold call” to somebody you don’t know? Unsure how to clinch that meeting or make that pitch once you’ve got past the switchboard?

If that sounds familiar, then the WWNG’s next evening seminar is for you! This interactive, hands-on session uses games to help you learn how to catch and convince your audience in just 15 seconds, and make sure you get that meeting locked down.

The seminar will be led by Patrick Pouchot, international project manager and change facilitator. Patrick is also president of Impulsion38, a networking group for professionals and managers between jobs. Part Impulsion38′s success is thanks to its emphasis on actively seeking informational interviews at different companies using cold calling techniques. Patrick will use games and role-play to share some of Impulsion38′s expertise with the seminar attendees.

Register Now! This seminar is free for WWNG members, and 15 euros for non-members.

Date: Tuesday 15th May

Place: Grenoble Ecole de Management

Congratulations to the newly elected 2011-2012 Board of the WWNG:

  • Mickey Farrance, President
  • Franςoise Lerond, Vice President
  • Michelle Onofrey, Secretary
  • Mireille Derain, Treasurer
  • Lotte Peeters, Programs Chair

We are pleased to welcome our brand-new Board member, Mireille Derain – who brings to the Board a fearless approach to accounting.

And on behalf of myself and the entire Board I’d like to say “thank you” to outgoing Board member Helen Perrin-Gouron, whose own fearless approach to accounting AND banking kept our accounts straight through the present (and even earned us a bit of interest!)

At the WWNG Annual General Meeting, we also did a bit of brainstorming about how to best use the money in our accounts for the most benefit of our membership.  The new Board will be meeting shortly to establish the association’s goals for the coming year (July 2011-June 2012). If you have a suggestion for a goal or objective for next year, or for anything you’d like to see our association do, please email us at wwngrenoble@gmail.com.

Note that we have 2 more social events planned through the summer (after our wonderful family picnic on 25 June!): an aperitif at La Table Rond on Friday 29 July, and a wellness day on Sunday 4 September.  I, and the new WWNG Board, hope to see you at one or more of them!

Happy networking,

Mickey Farrance
